Vladimir Veličković

Vladimir Veličković, an architect with a degree from the University of Belgrade but a painter and printmaker by his conceptual and creative beliefs, is one of the most distinguished artists on the contemporary visual arts scene of the second half of the 20th century and beginning of the new one. From the beginning of his career as an artist, Veličković, has continuously taken part in the activities of the Graphic Collective. There are several reference points in the history of the House of Artists in Obilićev venac that indicate the decades-long cultivated friendly relationship in our mutual mission of affirming artistic ideals and mutual support: he participated in the exhibition Young Artists of Serbia (1951); was Laureate of the Great Seal Award of the Graphic Collective (1972); had a solo exhibition on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Graphic Collective - donated a series of prints Bestiaria to the GK Collection (2009); took active part in the campaign to secure new premises for the Graphic Collective Galley (2016); wrote the review for the publication accompanying the jubilee exhibition of the Graphic Collective "Imprint of Time 70 / ∞, Graphic Collective - 70 Years" held at the SANU Gallery, took part in the realization of the project "Gallery Body - Identity of Place" - exhibition of woodcuts made from the Graphic Collective wood wall paneling (2019).

Vladimir Veličković (1935. Belgrade – 2019. Split), 1960 graduated at the Faculty of Architecture, Belgrade. Since 1983 until 2000 was a teacher at Ėcole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. A member of SANU and Academy of France. Has been awarded in arts and culture by Commandeur dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Lived in Paris since 1966.

A debate is essentially the one within ideas

Of his creative concept, the fundamental and necessary debate within the ideas that distinguish One from Another;
Of an educated architect’s sure hand and the sensibility of a Baroque painter for whom Art represents infinite divine freedom;
Of personal choice and circumstances, so that we can understand the author’s consistent affinity for figuration;
Of the clear signs of Veličković’s art founded on expressive contrasts, obsessive figures, spatial and thematic frameworks which contain (notwithstanding the titles) varied themes of martyrdom – the crucifixion, places of execution, the leap, the fall;
Of Grünewald and Bertolt Brecht – all the same - of Isenheim Altarpiece and the pathetic of the late Gothic or the magic of scenes and Brechtian effects of alienation;
Of Brecht’s rejection of (dramatic and other) illusions and his position: Unhappy the land that needs heroes;
Of works that continually, within a recognizable thematic circle, examine the tragic consequences of the twentieth century, projected into the current decade of the twenty–first century as visions of permanent suffering, catastrophes, destruction;
Of dramatic lines and creative fictions, necessary for internal mental, moral and spiritual transformations;
