Ljubomir Kokotović

Ljubomir Kokotović constructs a symbolic image of the world from accumulated objects with a doze of wry humor and cynicism. As an amorphous multitude, sets of related forms – chairs, bottles, bicycles, shoes, carts, helmets - grow into a metaphor of continual duration through repetition. Graphic articulation is achieved with a clear line that that serves Kokotović as a basic means of expression in a system where the compositional scheme becomes a distinctive and recognizable artistic sign. The emphasized asceticism of motifs and their transcendence into wholes of similar contents actually opens up the imaginary space of Beckettesque poetic charge. The jury justification for the Great Seal Award for 1982: the award is given to Kokotović for an unusual choice of iconographic signs which demonstrate the lucidity of the artist of contemporary poetics who cultivates a specific graphic expression of the intaglio printing technique.
