Miloš Ćirić

Miloš Ćirić belongs to the generation of artists which continued to nurture and promote the artistic and curatorial concept of the Graphic Collective during the 1960s, following in the footsteps of its original founders. Ćirić is the author of the Gallery’s visual identity, its emblem which has withstood the test of time thanks to its originality and clarity. He is also the author of the Cyrillic script the Gallery has been using since 1962, along with many program activities that have been held throughout this institution’s long and fruitful history.
Over the decades, Miloš Ćirić exhibited his works several times in the Graphic Collective; with his wife, the artist Ida Ćirić, he exhibited illustrations and graphic works in 1965, followed by his Studies of Signs in 1968, and Studies of the Cyrillic Script in 1972. Each one of these exhibitions was held in October. The artist’s methodical approach was reflected in all aspects of his practice - artistic, pedagogical, as well as his work with the Graphic Collective. Working within the fields of graphic design and fine art printmaking throughout his prolific career, Miloš Ćirić developed a recognizable style, and the process he used in creating trademark signs influenced his printmaking practice. The artist even categorized a large part of his printmaking oeuvre into series and published them as limited edition artist books. His meticulously organized archives include twenty artist books and seven bibliophilic editions, and a number of unique, hand bound books with no more than three copies. A part of his oeuvre also includes studies, variations of graphic design projects and presentations of logo commissions.

During the opening of his posthumous exhibition in 2009, Ćirić’s colleague Branislav Makeš said: “The creative work of Miloš Ćirić developed into two trajectories - fine art printmaking, and the so-called applied graphic art. Simultaneous explorations of both fields led him to develop a specific artistic style in which they become intertwined. The exhibition in the Graphic Collective features Ćirić’s fine art prints, and it is well known that the artist grouped these into series and published them as limited edition books. These were created in the 1960s and 1970s using woodcut and linocut, two techniques which accommodated his artistic concept and gave the highest form of expression to his prints and the contrasts of black-and-white or black-white-red. Ćirić was inspired by strong literary charges and succinct symbolism; his pedantic and methodical approach allowed him to create condensed, powerful and expressive compositions. His reduced shapes become a graphic sign-symbol and thus create a strong, poster-like impression with their simplicity and multitude of readings; his symbol becomes a sign. Carved text often plays an important role in Ćirić’s prints, be it poetic verses, aphorisms, or some other sources.
Miloš Ćirić belongs to the generation that first started promoting the Cyrillic script as the national writing system after the Second World War. He was attached to the Graphic Collective, and he took part in its programs.”

The last print he ever made was a linocut entitled Traditions of the Printmaking Department from 1976, saved under serial number 125. At that time, he was occupied with writing professional textbooks, especially the ambitious project Chronicle of Symbols (a five-volume lexicon of visual symbols, with over 2.500 pages and 10.000 illustrations) which he spent twenty years of his life developing. He believed this extensive work to be something he owed to his profession, and once it was finished he planned to return to his passion - free printmaking, but it wasn’t in the stars… as written by Rastko Ćirić in the Graphic Collective catalog in 2009.

Miloš Ćirić (1931–1999)
He graduated (1954) from the Academy of Applied Arts and received his master's degree (1959) from prof. Mihailo S. Petrov. Ćirić worked at the Faculty of Applied Arts (1964-1997), as professor of Graphic Communication. He was member of ULUPUDS and ULUS associations and held many solo exhibitions in Belgrade, Subotica, Zrenjanin, Novi Sad, Skopje, Bol on Brač, Priboj… Ćirić has published a large number of books in the field of Graphic Communication.
Awards / selection: Golden Pen of Belgrade, 1964; Grand Plaque of the University of Arts in Belgrade, 1983; Grand Prize of the Republic Community for Culture, 1987; ULUPUDS Lifetime Achievement Award, 1998.
The Miloš Ćirić Fund was established at the Faculty of Applied Arts / FPU in 1999 and annually awards students of this faculty for the best work in the field of graphic design. Since 2005, the FPU has been organizing the manifestation "Ćira's Days to Professor - Miloš Ćirić in Honor".
